Shingles
Middle Age (50–64 years)
2006
Shingles is a painful rash that happens when the same virus that caused chickenpox in childhood wakes up later in life. It can cause burning pain and blisters, and for some people the pain lingers for months or years. The shingles vaccine is given to older adults and can prevent most cases. It also greatly lowers the chance of long-term nerve pain.
