Typhoid fever is caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi. It spreads through contaminated food or water and causes weeks of high fever, stomach pain, and sometimes intestinal bleeding. Each year, it affects more than 11 million people worldwide. Vaccines, available as injections or capsules, are recommended for travelers and help reduce outbreaks in countries where typhoid is common.
